The quest for immortality

The Quest for Immortality series is an epic tale of six brave adventurers on a quest to achieve immortality. The tale takes you through their highs and lows as the face a myriad of dangers - from Goblins and Orcs, to Demons and Dragons, and possibly the most deadly of all - their own race! This is a 28 volume series.

This is the Dungeon & Dragon series actually played through, using my own version of AD&D rules. I role up the characters and play them as if they were each played by a different player. I make up the scenarios and play the characters through them as if I was at once each player and the dungeon master. So, although I can set up the scenario as I choose, I have to make random die rolls to determine what actually happens, so that I do not know how the action is going to unfold. So that I am not ‘dictating’ the actions of the characters I give them ability checks to deternine how they behave in a given situation… will they do something stupid? They will if they fail a wisdom check. After I had written a fair slather of The Quest for Immortality novels I became unsatisfied with having started the characters out at first level. How did they ever get enough money to afford their equipment and their first stint of training? So I wrote the three Preludes, billed as PQFI. If you want to start the story where I started writing read QFI1 first. If you want to start at the beginning of each character’s journey read the Preludes first.

So I was role playing six characters with myself and the books were a spin-off from that process, a detailed description which was really only supposed to be proof that the process had been gone through fairly and impartially. I very rarely had to invoke the principle of divine intervention to save any of them, only about three times in the whole chronicle, which is not excessive when you consider the length of the campaign

For a full description of the series

Download the 128 page PDF document providing a complete outline of the series [download]. This includes information for DMs on how to run these scenarios as adventures. Hope to soon include a table of monster stats for QFI1, The Orb of Agni. Otherwise below is brief description of the first 6 books and a table of the complete series book listing.

Book One: The Orb of AGNI

This adventure was one that I had made up for characters level three or four, for groups that I was running at the time. It was at this point in their campaigns that I first conceived of the notion of chronicling a self played adventure as a way of writing a book.

Book Two: The Dragons Claw

The second book in the series is a series of short adventures. The characters grow, train and develop both professionally and as people. The adventures are punctuated by months of training, detailing the professional development of the characters. They learn new skills and hone old ones. They develop relationships and reputations. Book Two is the book in which the six commit to one another and form a proper adventuring company, under the business name of The Dragon’s Claw, which is why I entitled the book as I did.

Book Three: A Few Short Adventures

This continues the series of adventures I had originally made up for character levels one to three. At the beginning of this book our six adventurers have just trained up to third level. So far they are still keeping step with one another in advancement.

Book Four:

The beginning of book four finds our heroes recently trained up to fourth and fifth level characters. At this stage the priest and rouge have the advantage of easier progression and have drawn slightly ahead of the rest. At these levels the game characters are tough enough to face major challenges, They are already becoming difficult to challenge and have to come up against a significant number of monsters in order to go up levels.

Book Five:

This book again begins with all characters advanced one level, the priest and rouge remaining one step ahead.

Book Six: Escape from Devlin or The Bell of Winter.

At the beginning of the book The DC’s are offered a deal, work for the evil Devlin Khan or die! They are sent to steal a magical bell from the temple/monastery of a God of Winter.
